The War of the Great Coalition was a major 18th-century conflict in Rodenia.

Background

In 1713, the Kingdom of Celestia invaded and took over the small Principality of Essinia. After that, some nations, notably the Duchy of Ravenna insisted Celestia back away from Essinia. Many nations, most notably Viola, backed Ravenna, while Celestia's ally, the Duchy of Corentia, pledged support to Celestia. The Great Coalition included the remnants of the Principality of Essinia, the Duchy of Ravenna, the Kingdom of Viola, the Principality of Santa Maria, and the Republic of Assiria.

The War

Early War

Upon Celestia's invasion of Essinia, the Duchy of Ravenna and the Republic of Assiria declared war on Celestia. The two countries, along with remnants of Essinia, fought Celestia in Celestia's southern provinces and the newly acquired Essinia. Celestia put up a hard defense, managing not to let any of the Coalition's troops into its territory. In late 1714, Celestia launched an offensive into Ravenna, which was slightly successful.

Invasion into Ravenna

Celestian military leaders launch an unexpected offensive into the northern area of Ravenna, taking the Ravennan military by surprise. Celestian troops quickly took over the countryside, village by village, until it was stopped approximately 20 miles into the territory of Ravenna. At that point, Ravenna managed to slowly take back a few major towns, but Celestia remained on the offensive, managing to keep most of its gains. At this point, Ravenna approached Viola for assistance. Seeing the threat of an expanding Celestia, Violan leaders agreed and entered the war.

Aftermath

After the signing of the Treaty of San Marco, Celestia's power had been reduced. However, Celestia managed to stay afloat despite various opposition movements, and by 1750 had nearly returned to its strength in 1713.
