StabMin stands for 'stability mechanism index' and is a rudimentary system to estimate the overall political stability of a country. It is based on the score a country has on two scales: one for the internal situation and one for the relations with neighboring countries. StabMin was originally developed by amateur political activists of the Integrationist League to watch the evolving tendencies in the relations between Granida, Navonia and Sudetia. Soon however, it was picked up by the popular media. Nowadays, several newspapers and news bulletins refer to 'changes in the StabMin index'[1] when covering foreign relations. The mechanism has been criticized by political scientists and high placed diplomats for its oversimplification. StabMin has very little popularity outside the Rodenian continent, and even in Rodenia, it is only widespread in Granida, Navonia and Sudetia.

Working Edit

StabMin is based on the scoring of a nation on two scales. The first scale expresses the internal stability of a country along two dimensions: government control and opposition protest. A state with less control and more violent protest is considered to be less stable and thus facilitate social changes. The lower predictability results in a lower position on the index charts. The second StabMin scale measures the relation with neighboring nations. Instead of using dimensions as the previous scale, StabMin here makes use of so called 'signaling conditions': possible events are combined into a single category and a nation is considered of that category if it shows most of the possible events listed. If a nation has different relationships with different neighboring countries, an average score is taken.

Internal stability:

  1. Excellent: government in control and the opposition cooperates within the system.
  2. Good: government in control and the protest of the opposition remains peaceful.
  3. Stable: government in control, but protest of unhappy opposition is on the rise.
  4. At risk: government in control, but with organized protest and a tensed atmosphere.
  5. Dangerous: government is losing control and faces riots and widespread violent protest.
  6. Chaotic: government lost control, several factions clash and bring about civil war.

Foreign relations:

  1. Excellent: strong integration of both national policies, regular political consultation.
  2. Good: cooperation on global issues, strong diplomatic consultation, symbolic meetings.
  3. Neutral: casual contact, friendly attitude, both aiming at regional stability.
  4. Stable: little contact, no mutual interests, diplomatic incidents, economic strife.
  5. Cold: border incidents, diplomatic crises, economic or military pressure.
  6. Hostile: active military and economic measures, opposition support and warfare.
